Mia, Single new immigrant

Mia is a 60-year-old single new immigrant who is facing Stage 4 breast cancer without a local support system to lean on. Her illness has resulted in severe pain and limited mobility, leaving her dependent on a walker to move within her home. Living in an apartment without an elevator, she found herself effectively trapped, as the physical barrier of the stairs made leaving for treatment or basic needs an almost impossible hurdle. A grant from the Lemonade Fund provided a critical intervention, allowing Mia to hire the physical assistance necessary to navigate her building and her daily life. This vital aid breaks the isolating cycle of confinement that often traps the ill and alone, restoring her connection to the outside world and her path to care. Providing this support ensured Mia felt truly seen and held, offering her the freedom and dignity to continue her fight against her disease.
